Class Description

Nonprofit organizations dissolve primarily because they do not use sustainability plans. Planning and positioning your nonprofit for sustainability is one of the most important processes that your organization must take.

Careful planning can ensure that your organization has the best chance of providing services to the community for decades to come.

SWOT Analysis 

SWOT is an acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

A “SWOT Analysis” is the first component of the Sustainability Plan. It allows nonprofit professionals to identify and discuss the internal strengths and weaknesses and external opportunities and threats impacting their 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.

It is very important for 501(c)(3) nonprofit professionals to allocate time to analyze the effectiveness of the organization in the community.

SAR Statement

SAR is an acronym for situation, action (plan), and results.

The “SAR Statement” is the second component of the Sustainability Plan. It uses the information documented in the SWOT Analysis to create a statement that explains the current situation focusing on internal weaknesses and external threats.

Next, you will learn how to write “action plans” to resolve the weaknesses and threats. Specifically, the action plans will allow you to “dig deep” to uncover the root causes of the weaknesses within your organization and how to correct them. The action plans will also investigate the threats that your nonprofit organization faces from the outside and how to diminish them.

Finally, the “SAR Statement” will include the probable “results” your nonprofit organization will experience from the implementation of the action plans.

Succession Plan

The “Succession Plan” is the third component of the Sustainability Plan. This component is vitally important to the success of your nonprofit organization. Unfortunately, it tends to be an uncomfortable topic to discuss because it causes leaders to literally prepare their successors to replace them.
