If you fail to submit the appropriate type of “Form 990 Information Return” for three consecutive years, the IRS automatically revokes your nonprofit organization’s 501(c)(3) status.

Although there are reinstatement options, the revocation documentation remains on your record permanently listed beside the reinstatement date.

What is the due date for the Form 990 Information Returns?

Form 990 Information Returns are due on the 15th day of the 5th month after your fiscal year ends. Therefore, if your fiscal year ends on December 31, then your Form 990 Information Return is due on May 15.

Since January – December is the “calendar year” most nonprofit organizations use, the majority of “Form 990 Information Returns” is due on May 15.
